Inland Invasion II
September 14, 2002

Scrapbook

So, fast forward many years to the year 2002. Having been a fan of the Sex Pistols for so long and never getting a chance to see them sucked.
I had a chance in 1996 when they did the Filthy Lucre tour, but because it was nine days before the birth of my little daughter, my girlfriend would not let me go. I don't blame her.
But here I am to tell you that September 14th, every bit of regret that I have for never seeing the Sex Pistols is gone.
It took what seemed like forever, but I finally got to see the band that was the biggest influence in my musical life.
The Offspring finished their set and the crowd eminated a sense of anticipation. It took nearly 20 minutes for the Pistols to take the stage. All the other bands were doing five minute turn-arounds due to the nature of the revolving stage, so s twenty minute wait had the crowd on edge..."Would they cancel?" and "Where are they?" were the two most overheard comments during the wait.
Finally, The Sex Pistols took the stage!
The band opened with the song "
Bodies" and continued with the set that included these songs: I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / No Feelings / Pretty Vacant / Did You No Wrong / Belsen Was A Gas / No Fun / Stepping Stone / Problems / Liar / EMI / Holidays In The Sun / God Save The Queen / & Anarchy In The UK. They finished up their set with a cover of the song "Silver Machine" from Hawkwind.
We rocked out to the Sex Pistols and had a blast. We sang along on almost every song. They were incredible. They blew every other band there away. They were as vibrant and vitally important as they were in 1976. They have not lost one bit of their edge.
The playing of Steve Jones (guitar), Paul Cook (drums) and Glen Matlock (original bassist) has never sounded better. Johnny Rotten was so full of energy it was hard to believe that he is getting close to fifty. And age has definitely not made him less angry or any bit mellow. He still threw nasty comments at the crowd, the sponsors, and everything else that he could think of. (To hear John's thoughts click here.) He seems to get angrier every year, and who could blame him...

The current state of "Punk" is for the most part a huge fucking joke. And the worst part is that most of the shit bands involved don't even realize that they are jokes!!! (HA HA HA… The Joke's really on You, the Consumer, and it REALLY isn't funny!)
The rest of the band seemed in great shape and health as well. (Although Glen was a bit over dressed.)
John left the stage with the following words: "Good night…and remember: We were underpaid for this!"
I am sure they were...
